Abstract

This community service activity aims to identify the initial conditions of elementary school students' interest in learning English, describe changes in students' experiences and interest in learning after participating in flashcard-based learning and English poster competitions, and describe the support of these two activities for student engagement and interest. The activities were conducted with students in grades 1–6 at one of the elementary schools in Samarinda City from August 10–20, 2026. The implementation of learning used flashcards combined with games, guessing, matching, speaking, charades, and role play according to the grade level. The English poster competition was held voluntarily with the themes "Stop Bullying" and "Unity in Diversity." Data were obtained through initial observations, teacher interviews, interviews with students before and after the activities, as well as documentation. A total of 11 students participated in the interviewed, and the data were analyzed descriptively-qualitatively through coding, categorizing, and theme identification. The results of the activities showed that students' initial interest in English was generally positive, but varied among students. Memorizing vocabulary, limited visual media, monotonous learning, and material considered difficult are some factors that hinder students' interest. After the activities, students showed a more positive perception of their learning experience, especially in terms of enjoyment, vocabulary comprehension, willingness to participate, and desire to engage in similar activities. Flashcards helped students understand vocabulary through visual support and interactive activities, while poster competitions provided opportunities for students to use English creatively and contextually. Thus, the combination of flashcards and poster activities can serve as a simple, interactive, and appropriate alternative media and learning activities to support students' learning experiences and engagement in English language learning in elementary school.
