Abstract

Clean and healthy living behavior (PHBS) in schools requires a smoke-free environment, while adolescents are increasingly exposed to both conventional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes. This community engagement activity aimed to strengthen students' understanding of PHBS, nicotine dependence, and the health risks of smoking and vaping, as well as to encourage refusal behavior. The activity was conducted at SMA Negeri 11 Samarinda on 11 August 2026 following preparation from 1 to 10 August 2026. A participatory health-education approach combined a presentation, an educational poster, a short video, guided discussion, a question-and-answer session, observation, and brief post-activity interviews. Participants comprised 35 grade XI students aged 16-17 years, and the activity lasted three hours. Process evaluation focused on implementation, student participation, messages recalled after the session, correction of vaping-related misconceptions, and intended preventive actions. Interviews with 10 students showed that they could explain PHBS and the importance of a smoke- and vape-free school. They recalled nicotine dependence, harmful substances in aerosol, respiratory problems, impaired concentration and adolescent brain development, and cardiovascular risks. Students understood that vape aerosol is not merely water vapor and stated that they would refuse invitations to try cigarettes or vaping. The class was active and highly supportive of the discussion. These findings describe immediate understanding and acceptance; however, the absence of baseline and standardized quantitative post-test data precludes claims regarding the magnitude of knowledge improvement. Repeated school-wide education, peer involvement, anonymous pre-post measurement, and follow-up assessment are recommended.
